2, 3 or 4 days? How to choose the right desert tour from Marrakech

When people plan a desert tour from Marrakech, they usually start with the number of days they have. That makes sense — but the number of days quietly decides something more important: which desert you will actually see.

Morocco has three desert experiences that are realistic from Marrakech: the stony Agafay desert on the edge of the city, the dunes of Zagora and the Draa Valley, and the great sand sea of Erg Chebbi at Merzouga. The length of your tour determines which of these you can reach without spending your whole holiday in a vehicle. Here is the honest breakdown I give every guest.

The 1-day option: the Agafay desert

If you only have one day, you will not reach the Sahara. What you can do is spend an afternoon and evening in the Agafay desert, about 40 kilometres from Marrakech — a rolling landscape of stone and hills with the High Atlas on the horizon. It is beautiful at sunset and perfect for quad biking, a camel ride and dinner under the stars. It is not, however, a sand-dune desert. We explain the difference in our Agafay vs Merzouga comparison, and you can see the experience on our Agafay desert day trip page.

The 2-day tour: Zagora, not Merzouga

Many agencies sell a two-day desert tour from Marrakech. Almost all of them go to Zagora, in the Draa Valley, rather than to Merzouga — because Merzouga is simply too far to reach and return from in two days. Zagora is about seven hours from Marrakech, and the dunes there are much smaller than Erg Chebbi.

A two-day trip can still be lovely: you cross the Atlas, see Ait Ben Haddou and the palm groves of the Draa Valley, and spend a night in a desert camp. But if your dream is the image of huge orange dunes, two days will leave you disappointed. In that case, it is worth finding one more day.

The 3-day tour: Merzouga and Erg Chebbi

Three days is the minimum for a real Sahara experience at Merzouga. The typical rhythm is: day one from Marrakech over the Tichka pass to Ait Ben Haddou and the Dades Valley; day two through the Todra Gorge to Merzouga in time for the sunset camel trek and a night in the camp; day three, sunrise over the dunes and the long drive back — or onward to Fes.

The honest downside is driving. Days one and three are long, between eight and ten hours with stops. If you enjoy road journeys and landscapes, it is a wonderful trip; our 3 day desert tour from Marrakech is our most booked journey for good reason. If you want to finish in Fes instead, the 3 day Marrakech to Fes tour saves you the return drive.

The 4-day tour: the same desert, at a human pace

A four-day tour covers the same route as the three-day version but adds breathing space. You spend more time in the Dades and Todra gorges, walk through palm groves and villages instead of seeing them through the window, and you can add a second night in the desert or a slower return via the Draa Valley. For families, older travellers and anyone who dislikes long car days, four days is the version I recommend. See our 4 day desert tour from Marrakech.

5 days and more: the deep south

With five to seven days you can combine Erg Chebbi with Erg Chegaga, Morocco's wilder and more remote dune field, and return through Taroudant or the Anti-Atlas. This is the journey for travellers who want silence and space rather than a highlight reel — our 7 day South Morocco desert tour is built exactly this way.

A quick way to decide

  • One day available: the Agafay desert at sunset.
  • Two days: Zagora — or better, find a third day.
  • Three days: Merzouga, with two long driving days. Ideal if you are finishing in Fes.
  • Four days: Merzouga at a relaxed pace — our recommendation for most travellers.
  • Five days or more: the deep south, two dune seas and very few crowds.

Frequently asked questions

Can you see the Sahara on a 2 day tour from Marrakech?

A 2 day tour usually goes to Zagora, which has small dunes. To see the large Sahara dunes of Erg Chebbi at Merzouga you need at least 3 days.

Is a 3 day desert tour from Marrakech worth it?

Yes, if you are comfortable with two long driving days. You get Ait Ben Haddou, the gorges, a sunset camel trek and a night in a Merzouga camp.

What is the difference between a 3 and 4 day desert tour?

The route is similar, but the 4 day tour splits the driving, giving you more time in the Dades and Todra gorges and a more relaxed pace.

Which desert is closest to Marrakech?

The Agafay desert, about 40 km from the city. It is a stony desert rather than sand dunes and is ideal for a day or evening trip.
