Search for a desert experience from Marrakech and you will see two names again and again: Agafay and Merzouga. They are both beautiful, and they are completely different. Choosing the wrong one is the most common disappointment I hear about — so here is the honest comparison.
The Agafay desert in a nutshell
The Agafay desert is a high, rocky plateau about 40 kilometres south-west of Marrakech — usually 45 minutes to an hour by road. It is a hamada, a stone desert of rolling beige and ochre hills, with the snow-capped High Atlas on the horizon in winter and spring. There are no high sand dunes.
What Agafay offers is atmosphere without the journey. In a single afternoon you can ride a quad bike or a camel, watch the sunset over the hills and have dinner in a desert camp, then sleep back in your Marrakech riad. Some camps also offer overnight stays. Our Agafay desert sunset experience and quad biking in Agafay are built around exactly this.

Merzouga and Erg Chebbi in a nutshell
Merzouga is a village on the edge of Erg Chebbi, a true Saharan sand sea in the south-east of Morocco. Its dunes rise up to around 150 metres and change colour from gold to orange to rose through the day. It is about 560 kilometres from Marrakech — at least a two-day journey each way through the Atlas Mountains and the gorges.
This is the desert of the imagination: camel caravans crossing ridges of sand, a camp hidden between dunes, a sky so full of stars that guests ask whether it is real. Our complete guide to Merzouga and Erg Chebbi covers it in detail.
Side by side
- Distance from Marrakech: Agafay, about 45 minutes. Merzouga, nine to ten hours of driving, usually over two days.
- Landscape: Agafay, stony hills and plateaus. Merzouga, high golden sand dunes.
- Time needed: Agafay, half a day or one evening. Merzouga, a minimum of three days from Marrakech.
- Best for: Agafay, short stays, families with young children, a special dinner, adventure activities. Merzouga, the authentic Sahara experience, photographers, sunrise and stargazing.
- What you see on the way: Agafay, very little. Merzouga, the Atlas, Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades and Todra gorges and dozens of villages.
- Night sky: both are good, but the remoteness of Erg Chebbi makes the stars far more spectacular.
Which one should you choose?
Choose Agafay if you have a short stay in Marrakech, if you do not want long hours in a vehicle, or if what you are looking for is a beautiful sunset, a camel ride and a memorable dinner rather than the Sahara itself. It is also a lovely add-on to a city break.
Choose Merzouga if seeing real sand dunes matters to you, if you have at least three days, or if you want the journey itself — mountains, kasbahs, oases — to be part of the experience. If you are unsure how many days you need, read our guide on choosing between a 2, 3 or 4 day desert tour.
And there is a third option many people do not know about: you can do both. Several of our guests spend a sunset evening in Agafay on arrival, then leave for a 3 day desert tour to Merzouga once they have settled in.
“Agafay is a beautiful evening. Merzouga is a journey. Both are worth it — as long as you know which one you booked.”
