3 Day Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour via Merzouga

5 • 4 traveller reviews

Route

Marrakech → Merzouga → Fes

Duration

3 Days

One of Morocco's great point-to-point journeys — from Marrakech to Fes via the Sahara. Spend a night in a Berber camp at the Erg Chebbi dunes, watch the sunrise from camelback, then travel north through cedar forests and mountain passes to arrive in the ancient medina of Fes.

We believe the best journeys feel personal — with the flexibility to tailor everything from activities and accommodation to pacing and the route itself.

Highlights

A rare point-to-point journey — from Marrakech to Fes via the Sahara — covering the best of Morocco's south and north in three days.

Walk the UNESCO Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou and visit the Kasbah Telouet — two of southern Morocco's most compelling historic sites in a single day.

Ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes on camelback at sunset and spend the night in a fully equipped Berber camp beneath the Saharan stars.

Wake before dawn to watch the sunrise from the top of the dunes — one of the most extraordinary mornings Morocco has to offer.

Travel the cedar forests of Azrou and the mountain city of Midelt on the way north, with wild Barbary macaques often spotted along the roadside.

Arrive in Fes — one of the world's greatest medieval cities — at the end of a journey that crosses almost the entire country.

The Experience

More than just the destinations

Every itinerary is carefully curated to balance Morocco's most unforgettable landscapes, culture, and experiences — whilst still allowing the flexibility to customise the journey around your own pace, interests, and travel style.

Day 1

Marrakech to Dades Valley via Telouet and Ait Ben Haddou

Depart Marrakech and cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass. A detour takes you first to the Kasbah Telouet — the former stronghold of the Glaoui family — before continuing to Ait Ben Haddou. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, backdrop to Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia, is explored on foot before a traditional lunch in the village. The afternoon continues through Ouarzazate and into the Dadès Valley. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

Day 2

Dades to the Erg Chebbi Desert Camp

Head east through ancient Berber villages towards Erg Chebbi. Pass through Tinjdad, the oasis town of Erfoud and the edge of the vast Tafilalet oasis. A mint tea stop at Jorf marks the moment before the dunes appear on the horizon. Mount your camel at Merzouga and ride into the golden Sahara as the sun sets. At camp: a traditional feast, Berber drums and a sky carpeted with stars.

Day 3

Sahara Sunrise and Journey North to Fes

Rise before dawn and ride to the top of the dunes for the Sahara sunrise. After breakfast, head north for Fes via a spectacular route through the Tizi N'talghamt pass. Lunch in Midelt beneath the Jbel Ayachi peak, then continue through the cedar forests near Azrou — where Barbary macaques roam freely — and the alpine town of Ifrane. Arrive and drop off in Fes by evening.
