Marrakech is wonderful, intense and loud. After two or three days in the medina, almost everyone needs air — mountains, water, open space. The good news is that some of Morocco's most beautiful landscapes are within a day's reach. Here are the trips I recommend, with honest travel times.
1. The Ourika Valley and Setti Fatma
About 1 hour from Marrakech. The closest escape to the High Atlas: a green river valley of Berber villages, terraced fields and riverside restaurants. At the end of the road, the village of Setti Fatma is the starting point for a walk to a series of waterfalls — easy for the first one, more of a scramble beyond. Best in spring and on hot summer days when the river keeps everything cool. See our Ourika Valley day trip.
2. The Atlas Mountains and Berber villages
About 1 to 1.5 hours. If you want quieter villages, walking and a meal in a family home rather than a restaurant, head into the valleys around Imlil and Asni. You walk between villages, share mint tea with a local family and see the High Atlas up close. This is our favourite introduction to mountain life — see the Atlas Mountains & Berber village day trip.

3. The Ouzoud Waterfalls
About 2.5 to 3 hours. The highest waterfalls in North Africa, dropping around 110 metres in several cascades into a red-rock gorge in the Middle Atlas. You walk down through olive groves to the bottom of the falls, where small boats take you close to the spray, and Barbary macaques often appear along the paths. Long drive, but spectacular. See our Ouzoud Waterfalls day trip.
4. Essaouira and the Atlantic coast
About 2.5 to 3 hours. A whitewashed fortified port town on the Atlantic, with blue fishing boats, sea walls and a relaxed medina listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is cooler and windier than Marrakech, and the fish grilled at the port is the best lunch of the trip. On the way you pass argan forests — and, sometimes, goats in the trees. See our Essaouira day trip.
5. Ait Ben Haddou
About 4 hours each way. The famous earthen ksar, over the Tizi n'Tichka pass. It is the longest day trip on this list, but the drive through the High Atlas is part of the reward. If you can, include it in a desert tour instead — read our Ait Ben Haddou guide or see the Ait Ben Haddou day trip from Marrakech.
6. The Agafay desert at sunset
About 45 minutes. Stony desert hills, camel rides, quad bikes and dinner under the stars, then back in Marrakech the same night. It is not the Sahara — we explain the difference in Agafay vs Merzouga — but it is a magical evening. See the Agafay desert experience.
7. A sunrise hot air balloon flight
Early start, back by late morning. Drifting silently over villages and the edge of the desert as the sun lights the Atlas is one of the most beautiful ways to start a day in Morocco. See our hot air balloon flight in Marrakech.
8. A camel ride in the Palm Grove
About 20 minutes, half a day. If you want a gentle camel ride without leaving the city, the Palmeraie on the northern edge of Marrakech is perfect, especially at golden hour and for families with children. See our sunset camel ride in the Palm Grove.
Tips for any day trip from Marrakech
- Leave early — 8:00 at the latest — to avoid the heat and the busiest hours at popular sites.
- For trips of more than two hours each way, a private driver makes a big difference in comfort and flexibility.
- Bring a layer: the mountains are much cooler than the city, even in summer.
- Carry small notes for tips, drinks and toilets at roadside cafés.
- Do not try to fit two long trips into one day. Choose one and enjoy it.
“Marrakech is the heart of the country. The day trips are where you hear it beating.”
